Photobook, images of images.

 Unlike other art books, which illustrate and reproduce paintings, sculptures, or installations, photography books possess a unique characteristic: they present the image of what is itself the image. In this way, they emphasize the distinctive nature of photography, namely, that it is something "exactly reproducible."

Of course, the print size or the type of paper may change, but the image itself remains essentially identical. In a certain sense, anyone who owns a photography book can be said to possess the very same image, at least on an emotional level.

Leaving aside the commercial apparatus that surrounds photographic works and is driven by the art market, the emotion of seeing the image remains the most deeply rewarding aspect.

Sicily stripped of exoticism.

 

There’s an intimacy here, but also a certain estrangement: faces half-lit, gestures caught in awkward half-beats, moments that resist narrative closure. Like the work of Moriyama or Petersen he admires, Gurciullo’s images compel not by spectacle, but by their haunted, searching quality. In his Sicily, we don’t find neat stories or postcard vistas; we encounter instead something far more honest — a living, breathing theatre, as restless and fragile as the human heart itself.

Gaston Bachelard, nella sua Poetica dello spazio, scriveva che l’immagine poetica autentica non si spiega, risuona. Essa tocca qualcosa di pre-personale in chi la incontra, qualcosa che esisteva prima dell’esperienza individuale. Un’immagine vera non porta un messaggio. Porta una vibrazione. E quella vibrazione trova risposta in corde profonde della coscienza che normalmente rimangono silenti.

La riscoperta del black and white

 Sembra che i migliori brand internazionali siano interessati adesso alle immagini in bianco e nero. Quando un grande giornale nazionale fa un articolo dove addirittura si parla della GR.....

Tra i fotografi e addetti ai lavori non c'è bisogno di dire la marca, quando si parla della GR sappiamo che stiamo parlando di una macchina fotografica tascabile prodotta dal marchio Ricoh. Non vedo lo spazio, ma il tempo.

 Fotografare la Sicilia. Un desiderio. Tutti i più grandi fotografi del mondo sono venuti in Sicilia per fotografare. Sguardi straordinari di occhi che erano gli occhi degli ospiti. Questi autori avevano già un archivio di immagini già formato. Cercavano conferme.

Il fotografo siciliano che fotografa la propria terra  non cerca conferme, vuole fare scoperte, vuole incontrare. Il suo sguardo è stratificato dal tempo. La sua visione non riguarda lo spazio ma il tempo...
